On January 1, 2017, I embarked on a 12-month journey to discover a simple, healthy, abundant lifestyle and invited my readers to come along.
We are now 6 months into the journey and it is time to reflect on the resolution we declared.

Here is my path for staying true to my resolution. Can you relate?
Clean Eating: Be conscientious of what I eat.
- Eat slowly. I am less likely to overeat when I consciously chew.
- Socializing strengthens connection when I share a meal with friends.
- Think natural. Ditch the juice and eat the fruit. The actual fruit is a good sources of nutrients and fiber while the processed juice has added sugar.
- Good fat vs. bad fat. Foods, like frozen pizza and baked goods, come with a heavy dose of trans fats which are linked to heart disease. But some fats -- dairy, whole eggs, fish, avocado and nuts, for example -- are good for a healthy balanced diet. Researchers have found that whole dairy products help you lose weight better than the low fat version.
Exercise: Add more movement into my day.
- Stretching increases blood flow and range of motion which prevents injuries. Keep it gentle, don’t push to far and never “bounce” into a stretch.
- The 'One-Mile Rule' is never drive, when you can walk. It saves gas and adds to your exercise log. Get a backpack that will hold your library books or mail, use a stroller for the little ones, or grab the leash and take Fido along.
- Isometric exercise pits one muscle against another
- Take the stairs. In 1 minute, a 150-pound person burns 10 calories walking up stairs, compared with 1.5 calories taking the elevator.
- Park at the back of the lot. You are less likely to get in a fender bender, and you’ll get closer to your exercise quota for the week.
- Household chores provide a number of chances to be active around the house and yard. Save money and get a good workout.
- Get off the couch and ride an exercise bike or run in place while you watch your favorite show.
- Skip commercials. Do pushups or declutter different areas. You’ll burn calories and be more likely to stay out of the fridge.
Purge and organize: Picking a spot to clear out the excess every month has been rewarding. Many closets have been revitalized and items lost are now found. One big plus was the commitment to use up grocery items that were due to expire or have just been around way too long. I now have more room in my pantry and can see what is waiting to be used. I have extra room in the bathroom closet, the file cabinets and clothes closet. My organizing mantra, and one I spread to all my colleagues, is that if you want more clients, clean out your files. It works just as well for all those other hidden spaces.
Relationships: Time with family and friends is oh, so good for mental and physical health! People who take more vacations live longer and are less likely to have heart disease and other health problems. Spending time playing and laughing with grandchildren is the cream of life and keeps the older generation young at heart.
Other activities that help me maintain a Healthy, Abundant Life include my organizing work, colleagues, breakfast club, book club and volunteering at the Bushnell Theater.
Gratitude Attitude: As I visited a high school class mate this month, I realized how thankful I am of relationships that have spanned over 50 years. We both may have gone our separate ways, but once together again with a day full of sharing and reminiscing, it was good for my soul.
