April is Stress Awareness Month. Take this month's stress awareness challenge and learn the effects of out-of-control life swirling around you. Only when you are truly aware of stress and its power can you begin to minimize its hold. Stress does not merely afflict your mind, it affects the total body -- physical, mental and emotional.
Consider the following areas where stress has the potential to diminish the integrity of living:
- Environmental Tension: The amount of space that surrounds you and how you utilize that space has a direct correlation to stress. Does it provide a bit of breathing room or is it overcrowded with stuff? It is important to be aware of your stress levels in reference to your space and possessions. Take time to look around. Know when it is too much, too little or just right.
- Time Wasters: Every day is a rush from here to there and back again. There does not seem to be enough time in one day to get everything done. You are busy, as we all are, yet in all the busyness you may still be searching for more time to accomplish more things. If you squander time you will have fewer cherished moments of life.
- Mental Overload: The brain is constantly processing data in order to perform daily activities. There are days you can easily spew out information, and there are days when you cannot seem to pull it all together. These are the days you are trying to function on overload. Your mind is filled with chattering clutter that is clogging brain space.
It is time to de-clutter -- declutter your spaces, your calendar, your to-do list, your mind...
Life has it ups and downs, no matter who we are – rich or poor, young or old, celebrity or common folk. And, stress is a part of life. Everyone experiences stressful moments from time to time, but the degree to which we become overwhelmed can be reduced by the choices we make.
Simply put, we choose to live life stress-fully or rest-fully. We choose to juggle multiple bits and pieces, or we choose to tackle one project at a time. We choose to take on more and more, or we choose to be aware of life's boundaries. We choose to buy another item to enhance our lifestyle, or we choose to enhance life instead. We can choose to live in balance, or we choose to experience the unsteadiness of overwhelm.
It is all about choices!
Are daily road signs pointing you in different directions? Are there nonstop demands on your time, energy, money and space? Every aspect of life has the capacity to direct you this way or that way leading to confusion, chaos and clutter = stress!
Over the next four weeks, try to become more aware of stressful situations in your life. Through choices, you can control those daily stressors.
To reduce, and even eliminate, stressful triggers be mindful of your surroundings and those little pressures in your life. Begin to live intentionally.
Individuals who know how to handle stress are apt to have more enthusiasm for life, work smarter and be more productive.
