Sammy asked: Teach me how to control clutter. With 5 people living in this household, it is a constant battle to keep things tidy.
Sammy, all of us deal with clutter to some degree and it can easily get out of control unless we learn to tame it. Here are a few life management skills to help keep your possessions from possessing you.
- A place for everything and everything in its place. Yup, grandma told me this a long, long time ago, but Sammy, it works to keep your spaces neat.
- Declutter the most visible areas first. If you can manage to keep the counters, table tops and front entryway neat and clean, then the biggest job is behind you.
- Discern true valuable of those things that you have chosen to occupy your space. Keeping everything is impractical if you are striving for a clean, neat, organized environment. Learn to let go. Not everything is a treasure.
- Set a timer for 15-minute increments and focus your whole attention on the task at hand.
Take the decluttering process one-step-at-a-time — one closet, one drawer, one corner… And, don’t just shuffle things around. Be cognizant of those items that bless your soul (find a home for them) and those items that depress (let them go!).
